Chapter 16: The Flyer

I tore them down.

Every door on the second floor, then the first, then the corridor by the print room.

The tape came off with a strip of paint on some of them.

I had a fistful of flyers by the time the first students came down the hall.

There was one on the notice board, taped over the competition results.

I pulled it off and the corner of the results list came with it.

A girl in a green coat stopped behind me.

"Are you the one in the photo?"

I turned around.

I looked at the one in my hand.

The photo was taken from across the street. The bus stop. The night I walked my mother to the bus.

Somebody had been standing there with a camera.

"Throw it away."

"Are you going to tell us what it is?"

"It's my sister."

The boy with the backpack looked at the flyer, then at me.

"She's in economics, right? The one who got second?"

"Yes."

The girl in green said, "It doesn't look like a brother and sister."

I looked at her.

She stepped back.

The boy with the backpack said, "It's just a photo. People are saying stuff."
