Chapter 17: Sutton Apologizes
Sutton did not wait for the morning class to begin.
She walked into Studio A at five to nine in a black leotard, her ankle strapped, and stood in the center of the floor until the room noticed.
Twenty-two dancers went quiet by degrees.
Lydia stood at the back by the barre, drinking from a steel bottle, and Philippa's chair sat empty by the door.
"Everyone, stop stretching," Sutton said. "I need four minutes."
Nobody moved.
I stayed near the mirror with my shoulder strapped under my sweater.
She did not look at me.
"For two years I have been cruel to one person in this room," she said. "Most of you watched."
A dancer by the window looked at her shoes.
"I am not going to say it was a misunderstanding. I was told a lie, and I believed it without asking a single question."
