Chapter 20: The Night Before the Gala
We went to the theater at eleven that night because neither of us could stand the house.
Wallace had put a guard on the stage door and told him to call the police if anyone copper-haired came near it.
The guard let us in and went back to his crossword.
The Larkin stage was dark except for one working light on a pole, a bare bulb in a cage.
Sutton walked out to center, barefoot, and stood with her arms at her sides, looking at the black house.
"I want to feel it before it's full," she said.
I let her.
Then she held out a hand without turning, and I came and took it.
We stood there for a minute, two women alone in twelve hundred empty seats.
"She's out there," Sutton said. "I can feel her."
"We'll find her."
"I don't want to talk about her tonight."
She led me off the stage and down the corridor to the dressing room with her name on the door.
It was a small room with a long mirror ringed in bulbs.
A couch stood against the wall, and the dressing table was crowded with ribbons and pins.
