Chapter 23: The Offer That Matters
"Get up," I said.
Wallace looked up at me from the stage floor with his glasses in his hand.
"Margo, I need to finish."
"You can finish standing. You'll scuff your knee, and my mother will have opinions."
A laugh ran through the house, soft and startled.
He got up slowly, and I took both his hands.
They were shaking.
"I'm not saying it's fine," I said. "It isn't. You believed a stranger over a girl you never questioned."
"I know."
"But you said it in front of twelve hundred people with nobody making you, and that counts."
His eyes were wet.
"What do I do now?"
"Ask me again in a year," I said. "Show me."
He nodded.
Behind him, my mother had come up the steps in her good green dress.
She put her arms around both of us, and for a second the whole stage held still.
Sutton stood at the edge of it with the program in her fist, and the program said Fenner first.
