"Is that my cot?" said Babi.
"It was," I said, from the floor.
Aksel Vinter came in behind her, six feet of sunburn and white mustache, towing a second suitcase and a fish-shaped hat.
He looked at the cot, and at his grandson, and at my braid, which was full of canvas.
"Vlasta," he said, with enormous satisfaction. "Pay me."
"I said Thursday," said Babi.
"I said Thursday," said Aksel. "I said it first, over the sardines."
"You bet on us?" said Soren.
"A small pool," said Babi. "Of two. Dagny sent updates."
"Dagny sent updates?"
"She's a very thorough girl," said Aksel.
I stood up with the jacket held in front of me.
Soren stood up with the apron held in front of him.
We looked like two people who had lost an argument with a cot.
"Clause three," I said. "Nobody is setting us up."
"We didn't set you up, darling," said Babi. "We set a table. You sat down."
