Chapter 13: River Fork

"What a kindness," Mu-yeol said, and bowed to her exactly as deep as courtesy required.

"The Hall is honored."

Ok Hwa-rim beamed at him.

Then she saw Woo-jin standing beside the cart in his traveling robe with Cold Crane at his hip.

"Woo-jin, dear," she said. "You're riding with them?"

"The host may see his guests to the Fork, Deputy Chief. It's the old courtesy."

"How sweet you are." Her bracelet clicked as she pressed a hand to her heart. "How very, very sweet."

Behind her, twenty grey feathers stirred in the wind.

Woo-jin looked at them.

He looked at the nearest man's hands, and the way his thumb rested on his sword guard.

He thought, you will be the first.

They rode out.

On the evening of the third day the road ran out at the River Fork.

It was a wide bend where the river split round a gravel bar.

Black cliffs stood up on the north side, with a ford shining below.

Woo-jin had stood on this gravel in a dream every night for ten years.

He knew where the carts had burned.

He knew where Yoo-chan had been found.

"There," he said quietly, as Mu-yeol drew rein beside him. "Put the cart in the bend, with the cliff at its back."

"The ford is open on that side."

"They don't come from the ford. They're already inside the camp."

Mu-yeol looked at the twenty grey coats unsaddling by the fire, laughing with the wounded men, passing round a flask.
