The River Dragon Demanded a Husband, So the Scholar Stepped Forward novel · Chapter 18 of 24

Chapter 18: Heir

The old turtle Chancellor read the Court's letter three times, with his neck stretched so far out of his shell that it looked painful.

"It says *the heir the husband names*," he said at last. "It does not say *dragon*."

"Is there any law that says it must be a dragon?"

"There is no law that says it must be anything. Because no husband has ever been asked."

He took off his black hat and put it on again.

"I will say this plainly, young master. I have served three kings. I am not fond of Lord Hongde."

"Neither am I fond of you naming a carp."

"I'm not naming a carp," Liyan said. "Not yet."

He spent the next week going door to door under the river.

He talked to the carp elders in their weed gardens, who all wanted the seat for themselves.

He talked to the crab clerks, who wanted a paper trail.

None of them could answer the question he asked.

What does a river need from the one who holds it?

Mingjue slept most of that week.

He woke for meals now, enormous ones.

Bo cooked them with tears in his eyes.
