Chapter 19: The Porch
We were at Pike Lake in nine minutes.
Laurence drove, and Shelby sat in the back with her arms around her knees.
Brett's pickup stood backed up to my mother's porch with the tailgate down.
The front door was wide open.
Along the shore, the neighbors had come out onto their docks to watch.
Brett came out of the house carrying the television from the living room.
He saw us and kept walking.
He put the television in the truck bed beside my mother's silver tea service, a rolled rug, and a box of her books.
"Put it back," I said.
"It's ours." His eyes were bloodshot, and his shirt was the same one he had worn at the luncheon. "We paid for half of this."
"You paid rent. For almost nothing, you told me."
"I'm taking what's mine."
"My mother's tea service is not yours."
"Your mother's dead." He said it loudly, so the dock could hear. "She's been dead sixteen years, and she didn't have anything on her mind but you."
Laurence got out of the car.
He did not hurry.
Brett saw him and laughed, a high, ugly sound.
"Look who's here. The man who's going to lose his company tomorrow."
"Brett," Laurence said.
"You tore up your contract on a lawn and you think that fixes it. It doesn't, because I called someone."
Laurence stopped at the bottom of the steps.
"Who?"
"You'll see." Brett slung a box of my mother's books onto the truck and a few paperbacks spilled onto the gravel. "I've lost my job. I've lost my name in this town. I've lost the house I never even owned. I've got nothing left, so I figured I'd take what's in it."
