Chapter 14: What the Men Heard

The east cell was down nineteen steps, behind an iron door with a slot at eye height.

Yui turned the key, and the lock gave with a groan that she felt in her teeth.

Brunhild sat on the stone bench with her back straight and her hands on her knees.

She did not look surprised.

"Greta," she said.

"Greta."

"She will be hanged for that."

"She'll be thanked for it." Yui crossed the cell and knelt, and put both hands on Brunhild's face. "Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Cold?"

"A little."

Yui took off her brown cloak and wrapped it around the broad shoulders, where it barely reached the elbows.

Brunhild looked down at the small cloak on her large frame and almost smiled.

"Stahl has three hundred men waiting at the front," Yui said. "He thinks I'll heal them."

"You will not."

"I won't."

"Then he will find a way to make you." Brunhild's voice was steady. "He will use them against you. Every man in that vanguard will ask for the light, because they do not know what it costs."

"No," Yui said slowly. "They don't."

They looked at each other.

"Tell them," Brunhild said.

"You'd let me?"

"They are grown men. They carry swords into the Fen on my word." She turned her head and kissed the inside of Yui's wrist. "They should be allowed to hear what I carry on theirs."

Yui kissed her, hard and short, with a taste of iron.

Then she locked the door behind her, so the guards would find it shut.

The mess tent was a long canvas hall at the west end of the yard, with a sheet of wet snow on its roof and a stove in the middle.

Three hundred men sat on benches, in blankets, with bowls in front of them.
