Chapter 24: What He Owes
I read it twice on the step.
Shauna read it over my shoulder, and said a word Gran made her put a dollar in the jar for.
"Five million dollars," I said. "For looking after her."
"Her lawyer says I made her family a promise at the grave, and she married me relying on it." Evan put the phone in his pocket. "My lawyer says there's a prenup my mother wrote herself, and Madeline signed it without reading it."
I thought about an alteration ticket in a counter drawer.
"She does that," I said.
"I'm not here about the lawsuit." He looked past me, into the shop, at the basket on the cutting table. "I'm here about the other papers. The ones your lawyer has to read. I'd like to sign them."
"When?"
"Whenever you say. Wherever you say."
"Gran's front room," I said. "Thursday. Seven o'clock. Bring your own lawyer and don't bring your mother."
He signed on Thursday at seven, on Gran's coffee table, between the wedding china and the Sacred Heart.
