Chapter 13: Breakfast at Harbor Light
I didn't wait to get dressed properly.
I pulled on yesterday's jeans and a work shirt, and Caleb drove us up the hill with the Courier on the dashboard.
Neither of us said anything about the headline.
There was nothing to say that the photograph hadn't already said for us.
The photograph was from the dock, the afternoon before.
Someone had been standing in the reeds with a long lens.
Now it covered the top half of the town's only paper.
Harbor Light looked like a postcard in the morning sun.
Through the tall dining room windows I could see the long table, set for breakfast, and three people sitting at it.
Pierce was on his feet.
"Stay behind me," Caleb said as we climbed the porch steps.
"I'm not hiding behind anyone."
"I meant stay close."
"That I can do."
We went in through the front door, and nobody stopped us.
The cook had gone home.
The room smelled of coffee and toast and cold fear.
Cornelia sat at the head of the table in a pale grey suit, buttering a piece of toast with small, exact strokes.
