Chapter 22: Everyone Hears

For a second no one in that hall breathed.

Then the whole room spoke at once.

Chairs scraped, glasses clinked, and somewhere a child asked loudly what married meant.

Cornelia's face didn't change, which was how I knew she was afraid.

"Isla," she said, in her lovely carrying voice. "You're overwrought."

"I'm very calm, Mrs. Wynn."

"You are confused. Someone has told you a story."

"Someone has. Her name is Cornelia."

She reached for the microphone, and I stepped back.

"Caleb," I said.

He was already coming.

The crowd parted for him.

He came up the steps in his dark suit with a long white envelope in his hand.

He stopped beside me, close enough that his sleeve touched mine.

He didn't look at his mother.

He looked at the room.

"My name is Caleb Wynn," he said. "I have the certificate, and I want it read by someone none of you doubt."

He took the paper out of the envelope and unfolded it.

Pierce was there at the edge of the stage, and Caleb handed it down to him.

"Read it," Caleb said. "Out loud. You're the only one in the family nobody doubts."
