Chapter 7: The Locket

Cormick met her halfway down the trail and walked her up with one hand on her elbow.

He searched her at the porch.

He did it quickly and politely, patting her coat pockets and her boots, and she stood with her arms out and let him.

"I'm not armed," Lorelei said. "I swear. I just wanted to see her."

She looked past him and saw me.

Her face crumpled.

"Calla."

She ran up the steps and threw her arms around me, and I flinched from my shoulder.

"Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Are you hurt? Alder told me what happened. I didn't believe him."

"It's fine," I said. "It's nothing."

"You're in a man's shirt."

"It was this or a bandage."

She laughed through her tears and wiped her face with her sleeve.

Her hair was tied back and she wasn't wearing makeup.

She looked younger than she was.

She was the same girl who had lent me her shawl.

"Can we talk?" she asked. "Just you and me? Please?"

I looked at Cormick.

"I'll be at the woodpile," he said. "Twenty yards."

He went out.

I heard the axe start, slow and even.

Lorelei sat on the bench and pulled her knees up.

"I owe you the biggest apology of my life," she said.

"For what?"

"For all of it. For standing there. For letting Alder say those things." She pressed the back of her hand to her mouth. "I swear, Cal, I didn't know he was going to do it in front of everyone. I thought we'd talk first."

"He didn't ask me."

"I know. I told him he should." She took a breath. "He's scared. His father's been after him for months to take a mate who'd make the pack stronger. He doesn't think he has a choice."

"He had a choice."
