Chapter 22: The Pier
He took me down the service stairs, with his arm across my throat and the barrel under my ear.
Nobody in the garage dared to stop a chairman holding a woman by the neck.
He shoved me into the passenger seat of his car and drove with the gun in his lap.
Twenty minutes later I was standing on the pier.
The planks were wet from the morning tide, and the cold came up through my shoes.
At the end of it, a charred ring of posts marked where the boathouse had burned.
"Walk," Eugene said.
I walked to the rail at the end, the one my mother had gone over.
The harbor was grey and flat, with the Flats rising along the far shore.
"You wanted me here," I said. "You couldn't do it from a chair."
"I'll tell them you jumped," Eugene said. "A distraught girl, with a forged tape and a head full of her mother."
"You can't fake a recording with your own voice on it."
