Chapter 29: Forty Girls

I had a plan for twelve girls.

I threw it away in the parking lot.

"Forty," Junie said again, climbing down from the truck. "We need more cones."

"We need more whistles," my dad said, holding up his coffee can. "I've got thirty."

"Then ten of them share," Junie said. "That's only fair if they take turns."

She looked at me.

"I'm the captain, right?"

"You're the captain."

She marched out onto the snow with her clipboard.

"She's going to run the league someday," he said.

"She's going to run it into the ground."

"Same thing, done right."

Junie blew her whistle.

Forty girls turned around.

"Lines of ten," she shouted. "Tallest at the back. If you don't know if you're tall, you're not."

They made lines of ten.

Some of the parents along the fence laughed.

I stood in front of them in my black referee jacket, with snow coming down on my shoulders.

They were six, nine, eleven, thirteen.

One had a pink hat with a pompom and told me before I'd said anything that her grandpa was the boss of all the referees.

"I know your grandpa," I said. "He's very strict."
