Chapter 6: A Year

"Then it's us," Dex said again, softer.

I set my kit bag down on the walk.

"Explain it to me," I said. "All of it. I want to hear the whole plan."

He looked relieved.

He thought that meant I was listening.

"Okay. So the club's renewing my contract this summer. Three years. Big money." He talked with his hands, the way he did in interviews. "Courtney's network is pushing her for a national job. They want a story. Star striker, college sweetheart, second chance."

"A story."

"It's PR, Meg. It's photos at games. Dinners. She does a sit-down with me at the gala."

"And me?"

"You come home." He said it like it was a gift. "You stop the referee thing for now. It's making noise. You keep the condo, you keep the card, nothing changes. In a year we let it fade with her, nice and quiet. Then I tell the world about you."

"After the contract."

"After the contract."

"So I'd be your wife at home and she'd be your girlfriend on camera."

"Only for a year."

I started to laugh.

I laughed so hard I had to sit down on Robin's bottom step.

Dex stood over me.

"What's funny?"

"You practiced this," I said. "You practiced it in the car. You thought it was a good plan."

"It is a good plan."

"You hid the letter so I'd stay home. Now you want me home so you can date your ex on TV. And you drove here at one in the morning to ask me nicely."

"I'm trying to save us."

"There's no us, Dex. There's you, and whoever's holding the camera."

Robin's car pulled up behind his.

She got out, looked at him, and walked up the walk with her keys sticking out between her fingers.

"Evening," she said.

"Robin," Dex said. "This is private."

"It's my steps." She unlocked the door. "Meg, you want me to call somebody, or do you want to do it yourself?"
