Chapter 14: Confused
Annie stood in the kitchen doorway and watched the man she'd been engaged to twelve hours ago call her brain-damaged on television.
Then the screen cut to a reporter on the sidewalk outside the hotel.
"Mr. Keene's attorney says his client will make a full statement at noon, here in the hotel lobby, alongside his father."
Gran turned it off.
"Well," she said. "He's got nerve. I'll give him that. I won't give him anything else."
Annie hadn't moved.
"Confused," she said.
"Annie."
"He sat in my hospital room for a year telling me what happened. And now I'm confused." She turned around. "What time is it?"
"Seven ten."
"I need a dress that isn't wet. And a ride."
Gran was already reaching for her car keys.
"Wear the blue one in my closet," she said. "It's from 1971. It'll fit you. I had a waist."
At eleven fifty, the hotel lobby was full of cameras.
Not just the local stations. A van from Columbia. A woman from the Atlanta paper with a notebook.
The gala banner was gone from the ballroom doors. Somebody had left the easel. The giant photo of Bryce was turned to face the wall.
A podium stood in front of the wall of water, with Keene Development's logo on the front.
