Chapter 20: Raw Footage

I hung up and stood on Newbury Street with the garment bag over my arm.

Moira watched my face.

"That was the sister."

"That was the sister."

"And?"

"And she doesn't know what she'll say."

"Well, that makes two of you," Moira said, and took the dress from me so I wouldn't drop it in a puddle.

That night I sat on my bed on the top floor and scrolled back through two months of texts.

I found the one I'd saved in October.

"This is the camera operator from the dinner. I'm glad you're okay. I'd like to talk to you someday about what I filmed."

I wrote back.

"Is someday this week?"

She answered in four minutes.

"Tomorrow. Where?"

She came to Moira's on Wednesday night after the kid was asleep.

She was younger than I'd thought, maybe twenty-five, with a knit hat and a backpack full of hard drives.

She sat at the kitchen table without taking her coat off.

Moira put a cup of tea in front of her and a plate of shepherd's pie she hadn't asked for.

"Eat," Moira said.

"I'm okay."

"Nobody in this house is okay. Eat."

She ate.

Then she took a laptop out of her backpack and opened it.

"The producer had me back up every card from the dinner," she said. "That's my job. I keep two copies of everything."

"Does she know you still have them?"

"She knows I have them. She thinks I deleted the part she told me to." She turned the laptop toward me. "I don't delete things. That's also my job."
