Chapter 29: First Date
"Coney Island," I said.
He blinked. "In March?"
"It's April on Saturday. The Cyclone opens."
"What's the Cyclone?"
I stared at him.
"Lucas. Have you ever been on a roller coaster?"
He thought about it honestly.
"After I was twelve, nobody let me go anywhere with crowds," he said. "Before that, my mother thought they were common."
"Saturday," I said. "Wear sneakers. Do you own sneakers?"
"I'll buy sneakers."

He picked me up on Saturday in a yellow cab, because I'd told him if he brought a driver I'd arrest him.
He was in jeans, a gray sweater and the whitest sneakers in the five boroughs.
"Did you buy those this morning?"
"Yesterday. I walked around the apartment in them for an hour to break them in."
"Did it work?"
"I have a blister."
We took the Q train the rest of the way.
He held the pole.
The boardwalk was cold and bright, wind coming off the water, gulls fighting over a pretzel.
The Cyclone stood against the sky like a wooden skeleton.
Lucas looked up at it for a long time.
"It's made of wood," he said.
"Since 1927."
"That's not the reassurance you think it is."
We stood in line behind a family of six and two teenagers.
The teenagers kept looking at him like they'd seen his face on the news.
He'd been on the news a lot that winter.
He got in the car beside me and pulled the lap bar down so hard the attendant laughed.
"You can still get off," I said.
"No."
"You're white."
"I'm always white. Ask the Post."
The car clanked up the first hill.
He gripped my hand so hard my ring cut into my finger.
At the top, for one second, you could see the whole ocean.
"Jules," he said. "I want to say something before we die."
Then we dropped.
He screamed the whole way down.
Not a manly scream.
