Chapter 13: Walk Out
"I was the one who sent you to him," he had said, and now the ballroom was so quiet I could hear my own pulse.
I picked up the retainer slip from the parquet floor.
I folded it in half and put it in my back pocket.
"I'm going to get my tools," I said.
"Maya."
"Don't."
"Let me say one thing."
"You've said your things, Eli. You said them with your whole chest, and I believed every one."
He closed his mouth.
That was the part I couldn't forgive in the moment.
He didn't beg, and he didn't argue, and he didn't step into my way.
He stood under the birch ring with his hands open at his sides and let me walk.
Carly was waiting outside the ballroom doors with her arms crossed.
She took one look at me and asked nothing.
We went down to the lobby together.
My tools were in the plant room behind the service desk, in the same canvas roll I had carried since I was twenty-two.
I rolled up my shears, my wire cutters and my knife.
