Chapter 23: The Chapel on Michigan
My mother arrived at the Hartwell Chicago at noon on Sunday in a lavender suit and a hat, holding her cane in one hand and a casserole in the other.
"I'm not coming to a wedding without a dish," she said.
"Mom, it's a hotel."
"They'll have forgotten something."
She was fifty-eight and had learned to walk again at fifty-three.
She had also lost the right half of her smile once and gained a stubborn left one that made up the difference.
I took the casserole and hugged her until the hat tilted.
"You're taller than I remember," she said.
"I'm the same height."
"Then I've shrunk.
Where is he?"
"Mom, listen.
Before he comes, I have to tell you something.
He paid the hospital's last bill after your stroke.
It wasn't a charity fund.
It was him."
She looked at me for a moment with her head tilted.
"I know," she said.
"What?"
"He drove to Joliet on Wednesday and knocked on my door with his hat in his hands.
He sat down at my kitchen table and told me the whole thing, the chapel, the lawyer, all of it.
I made him eat a pork chop."
I stared.
"He did that without telling me?"
