Chapter 23: Guests at the Gate
Qirong arrived carrying his own chair.
It was a small folding one, wrapped in a servant's plain cloth.
The servant followed with nothing to carry and an expression of deep uncertainty.
Shuqiao met them at the gate.
"We have furniture," he said.
"I didn't want to cause trouble."
His uncle tried to unfold the chair while still holding the cloth.
One leg caught in a corner.
Shuqiao took the cloth and handed it to the servant.
He wouldn't make this visit harder for the man who'd carried no part of the original insult.
Qirong finally opened the chair and stood beside it.
Neither nephew nor uncle seemed sure whether the ceremony was finished.
Yunting came from the courtyard with two cups of tea.
He gave one to Shuqiao and put the other on the table inside.
The uncle carried his chair to it.
