Chapter 19: The Light Timer

Rafa's POV

I had put my name on a piece of paper that afternoon, and I was still carrying the feeling of it up the stairs.

It was one page, in block capitals, dropped in the mailbox marked MANAGEMENT in the vestibule, with my signature at the bottom.

It said the log was mine.

It said every callout on Unit 3R was my decision, that no tenant had ever been told, and that any fault belonged to Rafael Ibarra alone.

I did not put her name on it.

I put mine on it as plainly as I could, so that whatever came next would land on me.

At eight o'clock I climbed the back stairwell with a sack of salt for the porch, and the door of 3R opened above me.

She came out onto the landing in her gray skirt with a bag of trash in her hand.

"Alibi?" I said.

"Garbage."

"It's Tuesday," I said.

"It's a very full bag, Rafa."

She set it on the top step and looked down at me.

She had her hair down, and her glasses on their chain, and a green cardigan I had watched her button wrong all week.

I stopped one stair below her.

"Rule one," I said.

"I wrote rule one."

"Nothing happens in the hall."

"I wrote it," she said, "so I can amend it."

She came down the step between us and put her hand flat on my chest.

"For the length of a light," she said.

The bulb above us was the old yellow one on the building's timer, and I knew exactly how long it ran.
