Chapter 21: Hands on My Thighs
I led him across the courtyard in the cold with my coat open and my hand locked around his wrist, and neither of us said a word until his door closed behind us.
The lamp in 1G was on, and his uncle looked out of the photograph in his straw hat.
I let go of Rafa and turned around.
He stood with his back against his own door, and his eyes were red.
He was smiling in a way that made the chipped tooth look young.
"You said you'd ask me for something," he said.
"I did."
"Ask," he said.
"Tell me what to do."
He went still.
"Tonight," I said. "All of it. I don't want to decide one thing. Tell me what to do, and I'll do it, and you'll tell me whether it was good."
I had never said anything so naked in my life, and I'd said some things in that man's presence.
"Say it again," he said.
"Tell me what to do."
"Take your coat off."
I took it off.
I held it for a second, not knowing where to put it, and he said, "Floor," and I dropped it.
"Everything else."
I undressed in the middle of his rug under the lamp, the cardigan and the blouse and the skirt and the rest.
I did not hurry and I did not hide.
When I was done I stood with my hands at my sides.
He crossed the room to the bedroom door and came back dragging the wooden chair from the corner.
He set it in the center of the rug, facing me.
He sat down.
He sat the way he does everything, plainly, with his boots flat and his knees apart and his hands on his thighs.
"Kneel."
I knelt.
The rug was rough under my knees, and I came down between his legs, close, with my face level with his belt.
"Put your hands on my thighs."
