Chapter 22: The Collar
Rafa's POV
It took me three tries to engrave the tag.
The first one came out crooked, and the second slipped under the punch.
The third I kept, a small round brass disc the size of a thumbnail with a single letter on it.
M.
I had cut the leather myself out of a scrap of black harness hide I bought in Logan Square.
I stitched it at my workbench at night with an awl and waxed thread.
My uncle taught me that on tool belts.
He never said a thing about it, but he would have laughed himself sick.
On Wednesday the twenty-third, at nine at night, the courtyard lay under an inch of new snow.
I took the pouch out of my dresser drawer and put it in the pocket of my coat.
I climbed the stairs slowly.
Three flights, slow and steady.
I knocked on the door of 3R, two raps, evenly spaced, and my hand was not as steady as I wanted.
She opened it.
She had on the old green robe, and her hair was down.
She had not put on her glasses, so she looked at me with her naked grey-blue eyes and saw everything.
"You're early," she said.
"I'm on time."
"You look like you ran up the stairs," she said.
"I walked."
"Then you look like you're about to be sick."
I laughed, and it came out wrong, and she took my sleeve and pulled me inside and shut the door.
In the bedroom I sat her on the edge of the bed.
I knelt on the floor in front of her, which was not the plan.
I took the pouch out and opened the drawstring with my thumb.
