Chapter 4: Candy Bowl
By six o'clock on Halloween, the courtyard was full of children and Dolores was giving out full-size candy bars from her front window.
She sat on a kitchen chair she had dragged to the sill, in her quilted house coat and a plastic witch hat, with a mixing bowl in her lap.
"One each," she told a boy dressed as a hot dog. "I know what you're doing, you went around the building twice."
He went around the building a third time.
I was in the courtyard in a black dress and a pointed hat.
I wore one black satin glove, because the other had gone missing in a drawer.
My whole building was out in costume.
The man from 2F was a dinosaur, and the couple from 3F were two halves of a pizza.
The tenant below me had come as herself, with a cat-ear headband and an apology.
Rafa came across the cobbles carrying an enormous pumpkin.
He wore a flannel shirt and his work boots and no costume at all.
"What are you supposed to be?" I said.
"The super."
"That's not a costume."
"It is on a holiday." He set the pumpkin on the low wall by the gate, took a lighter from his pocket, and looked at my hand. "You snagged your glove."
"I didn't."
"You did. Give me that."
He took my wrist.
His fingers closed around it, and he turned my arm over and pushed the satin cuff back with his thumb.
He rested the thumb on the inside of my wrist, right where my pulse was.
There was no snag.
He could feel exactly how fast I was going, and he left his thumb there a little longer than a person looks at a thread.
"Thread's fine," he said.
"Good."
"Good," he said, and gave my wrist back.
My arm was warm to the elbow.
Behind the glass of 1F, Dolores had stopped scolding the hot dog and was watching us, and she said nothing at all.
