Chapter 17: Dark

The respiratory tech had already worked it out by the time I got upstairs.

The three people on machines were breathing by hand now, a nurse squeezing a bag for each of them at the bedside.

"Fifteen minutes on, fifteen off," the tech said. "I need six people who can count."

"You'll have twelve," I said, and went to find them.

By four o'clock the hallways were gray.

By six the only light in Patterson General came through the windows from a streetlight on Eastern Avenue that still worked.

By seven it was dark, and I learned something about my class I'd never had a reason to learn.

The colors didn't need light.

I walked the halls with the dark all around me and the colors hanging in it.

There were greens asleep on cots and yellows propped in the hall chairs.

There were reds in the beds.

There were twenty-six reds, and I had eight crabs, and the eight were gone by nine.
