Chapter 22: The Chief's Badge

Imogen's POV

On Monday morning the board met in the room with nine leather chairs, and for the first time there was nothing to vote on except my name.

Desmond's chair was empty.

The one at the head of the table was empty too, and nobody had taken it.

"The chair recognizes the motion," the chairwoman said. "To appoint Dr. Imogen Vaughan Chief of General Surgery, effective immediately, on her own merits and not under any contract."

"Seconded," said a member who had voted against me twice.

"All in favor."

Every hand at the table went up.

I looked along the row from the wall, and there was not a single one down.

"Carried," said the chairwoman. "Congratulations, Dr. Vaughan."

Declan sat at the far end with his hand lifted among the others, and he gave me nothing but a nod.

I'd asked him to.

It had to look like the board's decision, because it was.

"There is one further item," the chairwoman said. "A guest has asked to address us. It is irregular."

The door at the end of the room opened.

My grandfather came in on his cane, in a black suit I had last seen at my father's funeral.

He did not take a seat.

He walked the length of the room, past the chair he had held for forty-one years, and stopped in front of me.
