Chapter 17: The Lakeside Court

Linchuan found him in the study, standing in a pool of rainwater, with his shoes in his hand.

He did not ask anything.

He took a towel from the lacquer chest and put it over Anzhi's head.

He rubbed his hair until it stood up, and then his neck, and then his wet collar.

"You walked here," he said.

"I walked everywhere. This was the end of it."

"You will catch cold."

"I never catch cold. I've been wet since I was twelve." Anzhi's voice wobbled.

"She looked at his heel. For twenty-two years she knew, and she held him anyway. And I wasn't even angry. Why wasn't I angry?"

"Because you are not made for it," said Linchuan.

"I want to be."

"Then be angry tomorrow," said Linchuan. "Tonight there is a towel."

He drew the wet jacket off Anzhi's shoulders and hung it over the chair.

He looked at him for a while, with the towel still in his hands.

"Today's rule," he said. "I have not given you one."

"I don't want a rule," said Anzhi.

"You will have this one," said Linchuan. "Tonight you serve no one. You do not carry, you do not pour, you do not make anyone laugh."
