Chapter 15: Fifty Swords

Auntie Wen opened the door herself, before Yan could knock twice.

She was already dressed, with her sleeves rolled and a rolling pin in her fist.

"I heard," she said. "Whole mountain heard. Fifty blue robes mustering in the Sword Yard since the second bell."

She looked at Chuhe's rumpled hair and Hanjue's flushed face, and her mouth twitched.

"Wash your faces," she said. "Eat something. Then run."

"Run where?" said Chuhe.

"Up."

She jabbed the rolling pin at the back wall.

"The Founder's Path."

"It starts behind the wash-house, goes up to the north cliff, and nobody has walked it in a hundred years."

"Where does it lead?" said Yan.

"I don't know. Nobody's come back to tell me."

Chuhe stared at her.

"You can't hold fifty swords."

"Child, I've held two hundred hungry outer disciples at a rice pot." She sniffed. "I can hold a stair."

She shoved a cloth bundle into Hanjue's arms.

It was warm, and it was full of buns.

He looked down at it with an expression Chuhe would remember for the rest of his life.

"Eat on the way," she said. "I won't have you fainting on the cliff."
