Chapter 15: Level P3

Rafe's POV

Jarrett's text came at seven the next morning.

Level P3 of the Holloway Grand garage. Come alone. Let's talk like cousins.

I showed it to Justine before I answered it.

"You are not going," she said.

"I am."

"Rafe."

"He thinks I'll come as the man who flinches. I want to see what he does when I don't."

She looked at me for a long time. Then she went to the bedroom and came back with Delphine's lavalier microphone, the one she wore at events, with its flat black pack.

"Under your shirt," Justine said. "At the small of your back."

She taped it herself.

Her hands were steady, and she kissed me once between the shoulder blades when she was done.

Level P3 was a concrete floor with a low ceiling and a row of pipes running overhead.

I stopped at the top of the ramp.

I had parked on that level for years. I had never once stood in the middle of it and looked at the pipes.

I walked in under them with my hands at my sides.

Jarrett was leaning against his silver car with a coffee in each hand.

"There he is," he said, and held one out. "Rafe. Thank you for coming."

"Put it down."

"It's just coffee."

"Put it on the hood."

He set both cups down on the hood, smiling, and came in for the hug.

I turned so it landed on my shoulder, away from my back.

"You look tired," he said into my ear.

"Say what you want, Jarrett."

He stepped back and straightened his cuffs.

"I want to help you," he said. "I really do. You're not well, Rafe. Anyone at that fair could see it. You threw your wife off a stage and said it's back, it's started again."

"There was a rig coming down."
