Chapter 8: What I Never Said

Rafe's POV

She held the note in her lap the whole way home, and I watched her read it a fourth time in the dash light.

I didn't need to read it.

Only one person in the world had a reason to look up the police report from that night, and I knew his block capitals.

"Rafe," Justine said. "Tell me about the streetlight."

I pulled the car over at the edge of the river park and turned off the engine.

Nobody was walking there.

There was no tree above us and no wire, and the nearest lamp was forty yards off.

I had checked before I stopped.

"When I was twenty-three," I said, "a voice started talking in my head."

She didn't move.

"It said it was a System. It said the woman I was meant to love was Delphine Archer."

"I know," Justine said quietly. "She told me."

"It said I had to pursue her, and that if I loved anyone else, the System would correct it."

"Correct it how?"

"By hurting her."

The car was very quiet.

"It told me that on the night I met you," I said. "I'd given you my umbrella at the bus stop, and you were walking away with it and laughing back at me, nineteen years old, soaked to the skin."

I looked at the windshield.

"The System said, 'Attachment detected.' Then a streetlight came down on the pavement a foot behind you."

She turned to face me.

"I remember that," she said. "It missed me. I thought it was luck."

"It wasn't luck. It was a warning."

"A warning for you."

"It said the next one wouldn't miss."
