Chapter 10: Open War

I let it ring three times.

Then I answered and didn't say anything.

"The storage place texts me when my door opens, baby," Mireille said. "Did you know that? Little ding. Every time."

"Good to know."

"You're in my unit."

"I'm in the parking lot."

"With my husband."

"With your husband," I said. "You should call him sometime. He's very helpful."

Etienne looked up from the truck bed.

On the phone, Mireille breathed out slow, the way she does before she smiles.

"I'm calling Luc."

"Call him," I said. "Tell him to be at the office at eight. And tell him to bring Mémère."

I hung up before she could answer.

My hands were steady.

Etienne looked at me over the boxes.

"That was something," he said.

"Drive," I said. "Before I lose my nerve."

The company office is a white wooden building at the foot of the big house hill, with a wide porch and a sign over the door that says "Arceneaux Pepper Co. 1914."

After the storm it was running on a generator that coughed.

At eight in the morning, everybody was there.

The two women from accounts, the shipping clerk, the receptionist who's been there since before I was born.

The foreman, in from the barns for coffee.

Mémère, back from Opelousas, at the big desk in the front room, her cane hooked on the edge.

Luc came in at five after eight with Mireille behind him.

He didn't say hello.

He walked straight up to me in front of all of them.

"You broke into a storage unit in Lafayette last night."

The receptionist put her coffee down.

"I opened a door with a code," I said. "Your sister-in-law's code. She should pick a better one."

"That's a crime, Josette."
