Chapter 19: The Deck

Lise handed Mireille a napkin across the empty table.

Mireille blew her nose in it.

"My house," I said. "You mean the company house."

"Your house, baby. He left my bags on your porch. Six garment bags and my curling iron, in the rain." She laughed, wet. "He changed the code on the door before I woke up."

Etienne had gone very still behind me.

He was still her husband, on paper.

He didn't say anything.

"Why?" I said.

"He says I'm bad optics now. Since the Facebook thing. Houston doesn't like a CEO with his brother's wife on his porch." She wiped under her eyes and made it worse. "You were on the porch too, and nobody dumped you."

"Somebody did," I said. "In August. You were there."

She looked at me.

For one second, I think she actually heard it.

"I need to talk to you," she said. "Not here. Alone."

"Lise stays."

"Fine. Lise stays."

We met her at seven, in the bar of the cheap hotel off Rampart Street.

Lise had booked us two rooms there, one of them for Etienne, down the hall.

Mireille had fixed her face.

She'd found a pack of red cinnamon gum somewhere, and the smell of it reached me before she sat down.

She put a thin laptop on the table between the beers.

"I built the slides," she said. "For the Houston meetings. The pretty ones with the barrels and the sunset. They sent back their own deck in June, the real one, with their plan for after the sale. Luc never knew I kept a copy."

"What's in it?"

"Everything." She snapped her gum. "What they keep, what they cut, who goes. Enough to make Mémère throw up in her pearls."

"Show me."

"Fifty thousand dollars."

Lise choked on her beer.
