Chapter 30: The Greenhouse
"Mémère."
I was on my knees beside her before I knew I'd moved.
"Don't you touch my hip," she said through her teeth. "It's broken. I heard it."
"Okay. Okay. I'm not touching it."
"And pick up my earring. Those were my mother's."
I picked up the earring and held it in my fist and called for the ambulance with the other hand.
The ambulance had to come over the causeway from the mainland.
It took twenty-two minutes.
Mémère spent every one of them telling me which seedlings needed water.
They took her to the hospital in Lafayette.
Etienne drove me behind the ambulance with his jaw so tight I could hear his teeth.
He didn't say anything the whole way.
At a red light, he reached over and took my hand, and he held it until the light turned green and for a long time after.
The surgery took three hours.
The doctor came out at nine at night in green scrubs and said the hip was pinned, the heart was strong, and the patient had asked him if he was old enough to drive.
"That's her," Etienne said.
"Is she always like this?"
"No," I said. "Usually she's worse. She's tired."
By the third day, she was running the floor.
She had the nurses bring her the newspaper, a real cup and saucer, and the island's Facebook group read out loud.
She refused the hospital coffee.
She refused the hospital gumbo, on principle, without tasting it.
"I'm not eating gumbo made by a man from Ohio," she told the nurse.
"Ma'am, he's from Breaux Bridge."
"Then he should know better."
The nurse came out of her room and told me Mémère had made her cry and then given her a recipe.
