Chapter 13: Forty-Two Bowls
The Emperor did not faint.
He went all at once.
Linyuan was standing at his left with the tin cup.
He had tasted the congee, the pickled radish and the pot of tea, and called them all clean.
Zhao Yunhe was joking about the radish.
He held a red lacquer spoon in his hand, and he was halfway through saying that the radish tasted like a wet boot.
Then the spoon rang on the floor, and his fingers stayed open in the air.
"Taster," he said, in a small, puzzled voice. "My hand's gone."
He bent double over the table.
The red bowl went over, and the congee ran across the cloth.
He retched until nothing more came, clutching his belly with the arm that still worked.
His other wrist hung from his sleeve.
Linyuan caught him before his head touched the table.
He weighed nothing.
"Physician!" Linyuan shouted. "Get Madam Ye, and get the Regent, and run!"
The attendants ran.
Linyuan laid the boy on the antechamber floor with his own robe under his head, and the boy's teeth chattered.
