Chapter 22: The Press Room
The press room was a long low hall with a hundred folding chairs and a stage at one end.
Every seat was taken.
Cameras stood in rows along the back wall, and the air smelled of coffee and hot lights.
Warren Stroud stood at the lectern under the federation flag, in a fresh navy blazer, with the pin on his lapel.
He had the captain's armband in one hand and the folder in the other.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he said.
"Thank you for coming on short notice."
We stood in the doorway at the back.
I wore my clean chef's jacket with the top two buttons open.
I wore my cow ears too, because a girl in the street had pressed them into my hands.
Mercer stood on my left.
Bram stood on my right, with his notebook.
Dex was at my shoulder, whispering, "I'm so nervous I'm going to be funny, I'm sorry in advance."
Behind us stood the squad.
I hadn't asked them.
At seven that morning I'd told them in the dining room what Warren planned.
The left back stood up first, then the whole room stood.
