Chapter 10: First Night

Edda closed the ledger and tied her shawl around her shoulders.

"I'm sleeping at the grounds tonight," she said. "Somebody should sit with the witness-stones. The back door sticks, and so does the kettle."

She looked at Torin, and then at me.

"Don't burn the place down."

She was gone before I could say a word.

The cabin was very quiet.

I stood in the middle of the floor, and Torin stood by the stove, and neither of us moved.

"She did that on purpose," he said.

"She's seventy and she's not an idiot."

"Brynn, I told you what Davin will say. If we do this before the hearing..."

"Let him say it."

I crossed the room and took his face in both hands.

"I've spent thirteen moons waiting for other people to decide when I get what I want. I wore a vine for a man who was sleeping with my best friend. I'm done waiting."

His eyes had gone pale again.

"And I'm not the pack's Luna tonight," I said. "I'm just a woman who's been standing in front of you for two days, wanting you."

"Ask me," he said.

"Come upstairs."

The loft ran along the back of the cabin, under the tin roof, with a narrow bed and a quilt my mother had sewn.

I had slept up there for a winter when I was nine.

I turned the lamp low and sat on the edge of the bed, and Torin stood in front of me with his jacket still on.

I took hold of the zipper and pulled it down.

I slid the leather off his shoulders and dropped it on the floor.

Then I pulled his shirt over his head.

He was bigger than I remembered, harder through the chest and the stomach, with scars I didn't know across his ribs.
