"No," Demi said.

Drake nodded once.

"I would not take it as a gift," she went on. "I have been given things my whole life, and each one came with a leash."

"This one has none."

"Every one of them said that."

She stood and walked to the window.

Below, the courthouse square was empty, and the Pellham building glowed in the dusk.

"I will buy it," she said. "With my own money."

"The price is eight million."

"I know. I have the trophy check, the sponsor offers, and the channel deal your network sent me." She turned. "It comes to a little over four."

"And the rest?"

"I'd like to borrow it from you," Demi said. "At the bank's rate. In writing. With a payment date."

Drake stared at her.

Then he laughed, deep and surprised, and got to his feet.

"You want to take out a loan from your lover."

"I want to owe a man money and then pay it back," she said. "I've never done that. Not once."

"You are the most expensive woman I have ever met."

"Is that a yes?"

"It is a yes, with interest," Drake said.

She crossed the room and kissed him, once, fast.

"Good," she said. "Draw it up. I will read every line."

The closing was on Friday.

Demi signed the deed in the Pellham lobby, with the bank's agent on one side and Drake's lawyer on the other, and the lobby floor still stamped with the gold outline of the old logo.

The agent slid the last page across.

"Your signature, Miss Pellham, there."

She looked at the line.

Then she looked at the name printed under it.
