Chapter 18: The Regulator
Marion had put on a blazer.
It was an old navy one with brass buttons, and she wore it over the denim shirt.
"Don't say anything clever to the examiner," she told us on the sidewalk outside the state office building. "Say numbers."
"Numbers," Eleanor repeated.
"And if you cry, cry in the bathroom. A regulator who sees a widow cry writes it down as a mood."
It was Friday, eight in the morning, and the sidewalk was still wet from rain.
We had a nine o'clock appointment on the ninth floor, and a banker's box on a hand truck.
The examiner turned out to be a young man with a lanyard and a cold coffee.
He listened to Marion for twenty minutes without interrupting, which she told us afterward was the highest compliment she had ever been paid by a state employee.
When she was done he looked at the folder, and the loan photocopies Marion had paper-clipped on top, and the outside reader's note.
"This," he said, tapping the note, "is very interesting. A professor says an executive tried to get him to make a false statement to a university."
"Yes."
"That's not my department." He took a breath. "But it tells me what kind of company this is."
He pushed his coffee away.
"Mrs. Fitzhugh. I have to ask something plainly. Under the plan and under state law, you are a trustee. Your name was on a certificate filed on July twelfth. If you report this, you are reporting a document you signed."
"I did not sign it."
