Chapter 19: Lowell at the House
Lowell arrived at eight, with two young men from the company in dark suits.
The housekeeper opened the door.
"Mr. Lowell," she said, in a voice like cold toast.
"Good evening." He walked past her into the front hall and looked up at the chandelier. "Mother Eleanor. We should talk."
"Then talk."
"In private."
"Anything you say to me, you can say in front of the people who work in my house." Eleanor stood at the foot of the stairs, in the grey cardigan, with her hands folded.
"Sam is staying."
"The help can stay," Lowell said, "if she likes watching."
His two men stood by the door.
I stood by Eleanor's shoulder, with my sneakers planted on the Persian rug and my heart going like a hand drill.
"The examiner called my office this afternoon," Lowell said. "You've filed a complaint against your own family."
"Against my co-trustees."
"You've embarrassed a man in grief." He took a step closer. "My father's name is on that fund."
"Yes. One hundred and thirty times."
His jaw moved.
"The estate is mine to administer, Eleanor. As executor, I decide what happens to this house. By Monday I can have you out of it."
"The deed to this house," she said, "has had my name on it since 2019. Your father's lawyer recorded it at the courthouse. You can look it up, or I can send you the copy."
For a moment he didn't move.
"You're bluffing."
"I haven't bluffed since I was nineteen." She raised her chin.
"Now let me tell you what I've learned, Lowell, since you've been so patient."
She had no notes.
She didn't need them.
"There are two hundred and twelve people in that plan. Divided evenly, you took fifty-nine thousand, nine hundred and six dollars from each of them."
