Chapter 24: The Final Exam

The final exam for Statistics 208 was in a lecture hall with two hundred seats, and Eleanor chose the third row.

I was not allowed inside.

I stood in the hallway by a vending machine with my back against the cinder block.

I held two coffees, and I did not drink either.

The proctor, a pale graduate student I vaguely knew, saw me and made a face of pure sympathy.

"Is that your student?" he whispered.

"She's not my student anymore," I said. "As of nine o'clock this morning, she's her own."

"Is she good?"

"She's the best one I've ever had."

At ten past eleven the double doors opened and people began to leave in ones and twos, looking pale and drained.

Eleanor came out last.

She walked straight to me, in her grey cardigan, with her reading glasses swinging on the chain.

Her face told me nothing.

"Well?" I said.

"There was a question about a confidence interval." Her voice was grave. "For a pension fund."

"There was not."

"There was. The professor has a sense of humor." The corner of her mouth went up.

"I wrote the answer, I checked it twice, and then I put the pencil down at ten fifty-eight and sat there for two minutes, because I realized I had nothing left to prove."

"Eleanor."

"I'm finished, Sam."

She took the coffee out of my hand and kissed me in front of the proctor and a vending machine.

The grade posted that evening.

It was a ninety-seven.

The registrar's email came a day later.
