Chapter 18: Ask Me Again

"Get back," I said.

Nobody in the ring had come closer, but I said it anyway.

Ossian's chest under my hand went still, then jumped, then went still again.

I'd watched him drink a whole basin of clear water in front of the court.

It hadn't touched the black.

Water wasn't enough.

It had to be blood to blood.

I pulled the little knife from my belt.

I opened my right hand and drew the blade across my palm, right over the old cut where the moon's crescent had been.

Then I took his black arm and cut it too, a short line above the elbow where the black was thickest.

It didn't bleed red.

It bled something dark and slow.

"What's she doing?" someone said behind me.

"Shut up," said the gray-bearded Alpha.

I pressed my cut palm flat against his cut and held it there with all my weight.

For a moment, nothing.

Then cold went up my wrist.

I felt it pull.

Not my blood going into him.

His black coming toward me.

Under my hand, the stain on his chest began to move.
