Chapter 19: The Mine
"I'm going up to the valley," I said.
Ossian stopped untying his boots from the bedpost.
"Tonight," I said. "With Corran."
The whole ward heard it.
The woman with flour on her arms set down a tray without a sound.
"The Council won't make the Alpha drain the pond," I said.
"So someone has to open the sluices before the frost does it for him."
"Then I'll go."
"You'll go serpent at the first sniff of black water, and you'll be dead before the dam is."
He didn't argue with that.
He couldn't.
"Who opens a sluice?" Agatha asked.
"The men who built it," I said. "The miners. They live in the hollow under the dam."
"Corran knows a shepherds' path over the ridge that comes down behind their row."
"And they'll listen to the Alpha's runaway."
"They'll listen to someone who can clear their water."
Ossian looked at me for a long time.
Then he looked at the apron strings in his hands.
"At the Fork I kept your terms," he said.
"You did."
"Now you keep mine." He held up one black finger.
