Chapter 26: The Silver Cup

The elder of the Council rose from his bench.

He leaned on his staff and looked up at the throne for a long time.

"It's true," he said. "A man who breaks a wolf's bones on pack ground owes that pack."

"I broke them," Ossian said from the throne. "He had his hands on her."

"The law doesn't ask why."

The wolves' benches growled.

I stepped out in front of the throne before Ossian could stand up.

"Elder," I said. "You keep the old law. Is there a law for an Alpha who poisons the water of every pack below him?"

The elder's mouth went thin.

"No Alpha's ever done it."

"One has."

The gray-bearded Alpha spoke from the lower bench.

"There's the well law," he said. "A wolf accused of fouling a well drinks from it first."

"If it's clean, he's clean."

The elder looked at him.

Then, slowly, he nodded.

"The well law stands," he said. "Nobody's ever struck it."

I took the silver cup out of my pocket.

I held out my other hand to the captain of the guard.

He gave me the chancellor's vial.
