Chapter 29: The Gift
"What secret?" I said.
"If I told you, it wouldn't be one." Agatha picked up the tray. "Clerks at eight. Get dressed."
"Agatha."
"It's in the hills," she said from the door. "And he's known for a week."
I turned my head on Ossian's shoulder.
He was looking very hard at the gold serpent on the ceiling.
"You're a terrible liar," I said.
"I haven't said anything."
"You're doing it with your face."
Nineteen days later, I stood in the square at the bottom of the Tarrow valley.
It was the same square.
The same stones I'd bled into the day I cut both bonds.
The long hall stood at the top of its steps, the way it always had.
But the shutters were open, every one.
The high table was gone from the porch.
Somebody had painted the door white.
Ossian stood on my left, without his crown.
The eleven women of the west wing stood behind us in a crowd, trying very hard to look like they weren't watching my face.
"Well?" said the newest tribute. "Go in!"
