Chapter 22: Warm Water
The lodge shower was a stone room with a bench along one wall and a showerhead as wide as a dinner plate.
He turned the water to hot, nearly too hot, and the steam rolled up and blurred the lamp.
I stood under it with my eyes closed.
The snow melted out of my hair and ran down my back, and I shook all over, and I couldn't stop.
"Sit," Niko said.
I sat on the stone bench.
He sat behind me, a leg either side of me, and drew me back against his chest.
The water fell over both of us.
His hands came into my hair.
He lifted it in his fists, the whole grey weight of it, down past my waist.
He held it.
He poured shampoo into his palm and worked it in.
"Cedar," he said, thick. "It smells like you when it's wet. Cut pine and cold water."
His fingers moved against my scalp in slow circles.
My head fell back onto his shoulder.
"That's the knot at the back of your neck," he said. "That's the one that doesn't go away. Breathe out."
I breathed out.
He worked the tight place with his thumbs until it let go.
I made a noise I wasn't proud of, and he laughed under his breath.
"Keep making it."
He rinsed my hair, slow, with a hand shielding my eyes.
