Chapter 5: Hancock Street

Elliott drove me home, because I couldn't drive and the bus ran every hour.

He didn't ask if I wanted a ride. He just took his keys off the hook and held the front door.

His truck was an old gray pickup with a dent in the tailgate and a first-aid kit strapped behind the seat.

I put my father's gray box on my knees.

We didn't go toward the highway.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"Hancock Street."

My hands tightened on the box.

"You said you didn't want my version."

"I said not yet." He kept his eyes on the road. "Somebody put four letters in a drawer, or in the trash. I'd like to hear one thing from you in person."

"Elliott..."

"Just where it happened. You were there, and I was there. We never stood there together."

I didn't say no.

He parked at the curb on the corner, under a streetlight that had come on early, and turned off the engine.

Hancock Street looked the way it had always looked. A pharmacy, a dry cleaner, a crosswalk with a faded stripe.

"There," Elliott said, pointing at the crosswalk. "I was walking my bike across. Late October. It had just rained."

"I remember."

"Tell me what you remember."

My mouth had gone dry.

I gave him the version I had given the judge, because it was the one I knew.
