Chapter 15: The Tall Chair
Gavin's POV
The chair was too tall for me.
My father had it built that way, with a seat four inches above the others, and nobody had ever told him.
I sat in it with fourteen board members watching and put my hands on the table.
"The first order of business is the Brennan Tool and Die sale," I said. "I want the original file on this table by noon."
"Seconded," said the heavy man in the gray suit.
"It's in the vault on thirty-one," the woman in pearls said. "I'll take the key myself."
The meeting went on for forty minutes.
Lydia was escorted out by a guard, with a lawyer from the board's own firm waiting at the elevator to take her statement.
She didn't look back.
Hazel stayed by the door until the vote on the interim chairman was done.
Then she walked out with Ruby, and I saw her shoulders come down in the hall through the glass.
My father hadn't spoken since the vote.
When the room emptied, he stayed where he was, in the chair beside mine, with both hands folded on top of his cane.
"Congratulations," he said.
"Don't."
"I mean it. You took it faster than I did."
"You want to say something. Say it."
He looked at the long table, the water jugs, the stack of paper in front of me.
"I went to the shop that night," he said.
I turned my head.
"The night Tom Brennan died. His wife had gone to her sister's. I knew the shop would be empty, and I wanted to see him one more time before the lawyers started on him."
