Chapter 18: Iron and Song
"Fire," the Marshal said.
The crank cracked, and the god-spear leaped from its frame.
It crossed the Rill in the time it took Ellory to draw breath.
It was black and screaming, and the barbed head was aimed straight at his heart.
Saren stepped in front of him.
"Move!" Ellory shouted. "Saren, it's meant for me!"
"I know. That is why I am here."
"No!"
He threw himself sideways with both arms, and shoved the god clean out of the spear's path.
They hit the shingle together.
Saren's weight came down on him, Ellory's head struck a stone, and white light burst across his sight.
Through it, from a long way off, a boy's voice laughed.
Here, it said. Here, I'll give you the end of it.
The words came up out of the earth like water.
Ellory did not decide to sing.
He was already on his feet, with his arms out and his mouth open.
